Hooray to Poliwood!

There’s an old DC joke that Washington is Hollywood for ugly people.

And for years, Hollywood’s Oscar orgy has been politics for the sexy people. Sunday night’s 91st broadcast from the Los Angeles Dolby Theater delivered.

“Saturday Night Live” alum Maya Rudolph led the ceremonies deadpanning, “There is no host tonight. There will not be a popular film category. And Mexico is not paying for the wall.”

Three time Oscar winner, Bond villain, and award presenter Javier Bardem delivered his own political thrust. “There are no borders or walls that can restrain ingenuity and talent!” — or the frightening pageboy haircut he sported in “No Country for Old Men.”

Winner for Best Adapted Screenplay for his film “BlacKKKlansman,” director Spike Lee implored the audience, “The 2020 presidential election is around the corner. Let’s all mobilize! Let’s be on the right side of history!”

Although President Trump was never mentioned by name by Lee, or by anyone else, he furiously took to Twitter to slam Lee’s remarks as a “racist hit on your President, who has done more for African Americans... than almost any other Pres!”

The Oscars are more political than ever, as the New York Times reports. But a poll last year from Morning Consult found that 39% of adult Americans were less likely to watch “if celebrities get political.”

29.6 million American viewers did tune in to see their glossy, silver screen idols tremble as they clutched the coveted golden statue. Alas, for Oscar, the carefully choreographed celebration scored the second-lowest ratings since 1974.

The biggest surprise of the night? Reading that baby-faced, millennial hero and Best Actor winner Rami Malek for “Bohemian Rhapsody” is actually 37 years old.
