Half Capped

Off with their hats! Political trendsetters have newly decreed the iconic “Make America Great Again” Donald Trump baseball caps talismans of evil. As actress and Democratic activist Alyssa Milano tweeted to wide applause, “The red MAGA hat is the new white hood” in reference to the white hoods donned by members of the monstrous Ku Klux Klan, trivializing the true horrors committed by the reviled domestic terror group.

Washington Post fashion critic Robin Givhan gravely intones that the Trump headgear (available in crimson, white, camouflage, lavender and pink at shop.donaldjtrump.com) represents “a lot of really dark forces” equivalent to the Southern, slave era, Confederate flag. Noah Berlatsky of NBC News insists that “kids wear Trump regalia... to bully and insult immigrants, Muslims, black people, Jews, Hispanics.”

The MAGA hat made its first, triumphant, Trump trademarked appearance July 2015 in sweltering Laredo, Texas atop the candidate’s elaborately styled pate. The “Apprentice” host needed a casual look “just for the sweat factor,” former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski recalls.

The bold style statement became an instant hit. Stanford University awarded the MAGA hat the “Symbol of the Year for 2016” beating out Hillary Clinton’s pantsuits. The New York Times pronounced it an “ironic summer accessory.”

Those were heady days. No longer. Times columnist Charles Blow denounces the canvas chapeau as “the new iconography of white supremacy.”

Liberal essayist and implacable Trump critic Andrew Sullivan worries that demonizing 63 million voters who rose to the MAGA call “is not the language of politics. It is a language of civil war.” Indeed. But what will the other side be wearing?
