A little over 35 years ago, President Ronald Reagan was mercilessly mocked by his liberal tormenters for dreaming of a sophisticated, outer space, American weapons system that could vaporize an enemy nuclear missile mid-flight with a zap of a particle beam or the blast of a plasma ray.
Senator Ted Kennedy sneered at the Gipper’s ambition as “a reckless ‘Star Wars’ scheme.”
Reagan was Obi Wan Kenobi-for his time. Fast forward to 2019. The US Defense Intelligence Agency darkly warns that the modern Russian and Chinese empires are furiously plotting to strike back.
The shadowy spy agency reports, “Both have developed robust... space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. Both states are developing jamming and cyberspace capabilities, directed energy weapons, on-orbit capabilities, and ground-based anti-satellite missiles.”
Needless to say, President Trump is seeing more red flags than a Mao Zedong festival. Last week, he restored the US Space Command to lead America’s very own glorious Space Force. “The Office” comedian Steve Carell may think it’s a Trump-sized joke for his new Netflix show of the same name. But the US military is already dangerously behind the Chinese which created their own “Strategic Support Force” of the cosmos in 2015.
The White House is pressuring Congress to act quickly. Vice President Mike Pence tells the Pentagon that POTUS wants the new Space Force operational in four months. Pence explains, “What was once peaceful and uncontested is now crowded and adversarial.”
Indeed. Over 1,800 satellites from 50 countries and corporations are whizzing above Planet Earth vulnerable to attack, the results of which could be catastrophic.
“It is not enough to merely have an American presence in space, “ Trump insists. “We must have American dominance.”
