Trump’s Border Victory

“The Trump administration’s long push to curtail the arrival of migrants at the southern border is finally showing results.”

A boastful White House press release? An emphatic tweet from tireless White House warrior Kellyanne Conway?

None of the above. So says no less than President Trump’s favorite failing hometown paper, The New York Times.

And in what is sure to be a blow to Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her Trump-bashing squad, the venerable Grey Lady reports that Mexico’s beefed up enforcement on its southern border is alleviating overcrowding in the US detention facilities AOC dramatically insists are modern day, American concentration camps.

According to Customs and Border Protection, the number of children being held in Border Patrol centers has plummeted from 2,700 in May to 200 in June. National Public Radio ruefully notes that Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy is emptying out Texas shelters.

Now, instead of waiting out their tenuous asylum claims inside the US, migrants from south of the border are being escorted back to Mexico to bide their time. Since early this month, American border officials have been turning back an average of 450 migrants per day. Reportedly, 40,000 migrants are now taxiing in northern Mexico awaiting their legal flight north. But many others are dejectedly heading home to the “Northern Triangle” of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras rather than languish in a dodgy Mexican border town for an asylum hearing that will likely end in disappointment.

As one immigration expert at the University of Texas tells the Texas Tribune, “There’s a big difference between waiting in Boston for you case and waiting in Mexicali or Monterrey.”

Migrants are taking note.
