Biden’s Big Flop
Former Vice President Joe Biden’s flip on federal funding for abortion is flopping with many political observers in the mainstream media. Last week, 48 hours after reaffirming his long held opposition to taxpayers funding the procedure, the front runner for the Democratic presidential nomination suddenly announced he was reversing course.
Speaking at a Democratic Party fundraiser in Atlanta, Biden declared, “I make no apologies for my last position, and I make no apologies for what I’m about to say.” Blaming Republicans for forcing his abrupt shift to the left, Biden says he now supports subsidizing low income women seeking “to exercise their constitutionally protected right.”
Washington Post columnist and committed liberal pro-choicer Richard Cohen snarked, “Surely, however, Biden was pushed by Democratic Party activists. At this rate, he’ll be a socialist by Labor Day.”
Meghan McCain, daughter of President Trump arch enemy the late Senator John McCain and who regularly bashes Trump, expressed her disappointment over Biden’s retreat from “historically a great compromise between pro-choicers and pro-lifers.” She told viewers of her daily talk show The View, “I feel slighted as someone who was open to him being president.”
Meanwhile, The Hill newspaper reports that Democrats on Capitol Hill are unlikely to allow even a symbolic vote to lift the 43 year ban on federal funding for abortion. Despite the party’s presidential candidates’ strident opposition to the ban, Democrats responsible for passing actual legislation are keeping progressive expectations low. A spokesperson for the House congressional committee in charge says that Democrats are not willing to battle Republicans over the issue.
Perhaps someone should have told Joe Biden. As McCain warns, “You’re not going to out progressive progressives.”
