Bernie Rebels

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is living up to his status as an Independent. The rumpled revolutionary is brazenly defying Democratic party leadership and collaborating with the fearsome Fox News Channel. On Monday, the presidential candidate will submit to questioning from the network’s anchors, Brett Baier and Martha McCallum, in a televised town hall in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Earlier this year, the Democratic National Committee loudly announced that it was freezing out the conservative media outlet from hosting a Democratic primary debate. But Sanders, who many believe was cheated by the DNC the last time around, is ignoring the party’s prohibition. The Fox News forum is too rich an opportunity to turn down: a free, extended infomercial targeting older, white, working and middle class voters in a key swing state that President Trump only narrowly won in 2016 by less than a percentage point (44,292 votes).

To be sure, the self described Socialist dutifully accuses Fox News of broadcasting pro-Trump propaganda. But, as he explained to an incredulous Comedy Central late night talk show host, he distinguishes between the network and “the many millions of people who watch.” His job is to win votes, not settle scores.

On the hot button issue of immigration, the Fox News audience might like what they hear. Over the weekend, during a town hall in Oskaloosa, Iowa, Sanders sharply departed from the upstart, globalist New Left, declaring, “If you open the borders, my God, there's a lot of poverty in this world, and you're going to have people from all over the world... Can't do it.”

Millions will be watching Sanders make his pitch, Monday night. Some might even give him a serious second look.
